The stone was taken to the institute d' Egypte in Cairo, which was set up by the French Expedition, where the French surrendered in 1802, the stone was forfeited to the British, together with countless other ancient treasures, which form the nucleus of the Egyptian collection in the British Museum. However, the French kept a copy of the stone, which was the one examined by Champallion.

The Rosetta stone was discovered in 1799 by a Frenchman. Egypt was surrendered by Napoleon to the English in 1801, so they got the Rosetta Stone as well as everything else. It is now in the British Museum in London.
