The usual unit seems to be the parsec (about 19,000,000,000,000 miles). A smaller unit is the light-year (about 6,000,000,000,000 miles).

Astronomers usually use light-years when presenting results to the public, as they are easy to relate to, but they use parsecs in their calculations and in dealing with other astronomers.
