Not only but also, a gnomon is "a shape which when added to a figure yields another figure similar to the original". And gnomonic projection is a map obtained by projecting a point on the surface of a sphere from the sphere's centre onto a tangential plane. Time out. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Gnomon.html

A gnomon is often used to describe the object that casts its shadow onto the sundial face. This fits the projection description above.
