Nylon was invented in 1930 by Wallace Hume Carothers, and manufactured by the Dupont company.
None of the links I've found seem to be specific about just how "nylon" came to be known by that name.
One popular story I have heard, however, is that the word "nylon" is a combination of "New York" and "London", but I don't know how true this is.

Dupont is correct...YAY!!
The name "nylon" has nothing to do with New York and London.
...so, how DID "nylon" get its name?
Dupont wanted Nulon or Nilon, both of which were already registered trade names. "Nylon" was the alternative name they settled on.

According to a text book I have, the name "Nylon" is derived from a corruption of the words "no run", describing the material's application in making stockings (which made nylon a commercial success). DuPont tried spelling "no run" backwards as "nuron", didn't like it, and settled on "nylon". (CH Snyder, "The Extraordinary Chemistry of Ordinary Things")
