Which order is the system of numbering asteroids?

"Asteroids are numbered in order of their discovery and many have been named. For example, the first asteroid discovered is 1 Ceres, the second is 2 Pallas, etc." The list is quickly reaching #10,000 and debate rages as to wether Pluto should be numbered as asteroid K1.

Pluto will most likely not have to be renamed an asteriod because then all the science books will need to be rewritten...Also, Pluto has a moon - something asteriods don't have.
