Which order is the system of numbering asteroids?

"Asteroids are numbered in order of their discovery and many have been named. Pluto will most likely not have to be renamed an asteriod because then all the science books will need to be rewritten...Also, Pluto has a moon - something asteriods don't have. Dec 15 03, 5:02 PM

Good thing there were no science books before 1930 or they would have never discoverd Pluto.
