"There are a least 400 different varieties of holly. The berries of a few varieties of holly plants are reported to be poisonous. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and a slowing down of breathing and heart rate can occur after eating holly berries. The exact nature of the toxic chemicals in holly is not yet known. Children might also eat the leaves of holly plants. These could also contain potentially toxic chemicals." Holly berry poisoning is actually quite rare. The leaves are rarely ingested as they are prickly, which in turn usually discourages people and pets to avoid the berries. Both the fruit and leaves contain a mixture of the caffeine-like alkaloid theobromine, caffeine itself, and glycosides. (Theobromine is also found in chocolate and cocoa.) Consumption of holly berries can cause vomiting and diarrheoa, with drowsiness, coma, and death occurring in severe cases (which fortunately rarely happens).
