The 1839 date for the invention of baseball is much quoted but it wrong. The first known reference to 'the children's game of baseball' was in 'A Little Pretty Pocket Book' in 1744 (18th century). It no doubt was played before this. The first record of cricket dates back to the end of the 16th century. So it seems likely that cricket was invented first.
