"Santa" is Dutch for "Saint", "Claus" is Dutch for "Nicholas", hence - St. Nicholas.

A Greek Christian from the 4th century, Nicholas, was known to give gifts to the poor, particularly children. He was granted sainthood, hence St. Nicholas. The Dutch tradition label him Sintaklaas (the translation of Saint Nicholas). When the tradition merged with the Saxon (British and German) traditions of Father Christmas, the result was Santa Claus.
