The blood type is a description of which antibodies and antigens are present in the blood. A person with A blood has A antigens on the bloodcells and Anti-B antibodies in the plasma. B blood contains B antigens Anti-A antibodies. A person with AB blood has both types of antigens and neither type of antibody and O blood has no antigens but both antibodies.
Therefore, it is possible to test the type of the blood by taking small test samples and introducing antibodies. If the blood agglutinates when Anti-B antibodies are introduced, there are B antigens present. It is therefore neccessary to test two separate samples, one with each type of antibody. If both samples agglutinate, both antigens are present, and the person is type AB. If neither do, they are type O. If only one or the other, then they are either A or B depending on which sample agglutanted.
