    Since the sun exerts a greater gravitational pull on the Earth than the moon does, why is the sun not responsible for tides?

    Actually, the sun does effect the tides to some extent. But the reason the moon has more effect than the sun is that the moon's gravitational force is closer and more direct than that of the sun, even though the sun's is stronger.
