The events in Egypt just before the Exodus have been placed in the 13th century BC, when the use of foreign labour is well attested and the city of Ramesses is often mentioned in Egyptian sources. The power of the Hykos pharoahs in Egypt has been broken and the Upper and Lower kingdoms have united. The nation is ruled from Thebes and Memphis by a new dynasty of pharoahs. With the accession of SethosI attention is again focusses on the fertile delta region. A great building programme is begun, including store-cities for Pharoah. One is named after Sethos'successor RamessesII. There is a large ready-made work force resident in tne area - the Israelites. The Israelites settled in Goshen at the time of Joseph since this region was suitable for raising livestock. The Egyptians worshipped sheep and wanted to be separate from a people who slaughtered them as part of their livelyhood. However, immediately prior to the Exodus many of the Israelites had assimilated into Egyptian culture to a large degree, had moved into at least one of the major cities of Egypt. If not, then the commandment to put kid's blood on the doorpost and lintel to distinguish them from their Egyptian neighbours would have no meaning.
