Grigori Rasputin.
Prince Felix Yussupov invited Rasputin to his palace on the pretext of his wife Irina needing his attentions as a healer. In a dining room in the palace basement, the prince plied Rasputin with poisoned wine and cakes; when Rasputin failed to die, the prince and his co-conspirators repeatedly shot him in the chest, back and head, and beat him around the head with a dumb-bell handle. They then tied what they thought was his corpse in a sheet and dropped it through a hole in the ice into the river Neva, where Rasputin finally died by drowning.

Correct Stew!
Rasputin was a self-fashioned Russian holy man, murdered by Russian nobles eager to end his sway over the royal family.

Rasputin died on December 16th, not this date...

What robboy is alluding to is that if you had been in Russia at the time you would have used the Julian calendar and thought it to be December 16.
