Customs vary as to what the first footer should be carrying (coal, a sprig of evergreen, salt, whisky, silver) but it is always a dark haired man who is required to be first through the door after midnight. Fine by me, as I am one!
The only explanation I have ever heard is that because the custom is originally Scottish a visit from a (predominantly dark-haired) local celtic chap was a much better omen for the coming year than a blond, who would be likely to be a (Saxon) Englishman or (Viking) Norseman - either way, seriously bad news!

Red hair is supposed to be more unlucky than blond for first-footing.

First footing, Hammy, is a Scottish custom of being the first person to set foot inside the house after the clock strikes 12, thus heralding the new year.
