The 700 series of Boeing aircraft runs the gamut from 707 through 777, so why is the 717 never mentioned in connection with passenger carriers?

The Boeing 717 is one of Boeing’s newest aircraft out of the factory. Developed as the MD-95 by McDonnell Douglas previously, the merger between Boeing and MD saw this aircraft renamed as the Boeing 717. One of the newest aircraft produced by Boeing, the 717 is a short range and low seating aircraft, capable of flying regional and also short distance domestic routes several times a day.

True, and as the question should have been more specific, I concede it was not well worded. The original 717 was the designation of the KC-135 tanker, built back in the '50s and restricted to military applications.
