"Ralph Doubell surprised by winning the 800m and Peter Norman split the American pair Tommie Smith and Juan Carlos to take silver in the 200m. Smith and Carlos were sent home in disgrace after giving the Black Power salute while on the dais during the medal presentation. Norman, a staunch Christian, wore a civil rights badge given to him by the Americans and by agreement the three did not shake hands.
