MGM, the company, still exists on a small property in Santa Monica, but stripped of both its historic Culver City studio lot and its former glory, the vast movie empire that was once MGM is no more. In the 70's and 80's MGM essentially stopped making movies. In 1979 corporate raider Kirk Kerkorian issued a statement saying that MGM was primarily a hotel company.
