    What are birthmarks?

Question #43085. Asked by Gimboid. (Jan 07 04 9:45 AM)

    Senior Moments

Birthmarks are basically an overgrowth of blood vessel tissue in a specific area on the body. It is not completely known why blood vessels grow too much in one particular area of the body but it does occur during the prenatal development. http://www.dbpeds.org/conditions/conditions.cfm?Abbrev=birthmark

Birthmarks usually don't have anything to do with being born. Some birthmarks can be inherited, but most birthmarks are unrelated to the birth of a human.

    Birthmark Statistics:

1 in 10 children are born with a vascular birthmark

1% of children born with a vascular birthmark (1 in 1,000 of all children) will require medical intervention

A port-wine stain, a type of vascular birthmark, occurs in 3 of 1,000 infants.
