Hollywood Rose and LA Guns...

Rose first performed in a band, initially called Rose, and then later Hollywood Rose.
Later still Rose was in the L.A. Guns.
The name GNR was taken from the two bands he was previously in.
The first bands were obviously named after Axl Rose (born William Bruce Rose)
L.A. Guns name came about because of the guitarist Traci Guns

It was apparently more complicated than a merger (according to Brewer's dictionary of names, credit where it's due).
Guns and Roses are simply the surnames of Axl (real name William) Rose and Tracii Guns, along with Steven Adler and Izzy Stradlin.
The band was called Rose, Hollywood Rose, then LA Guns. When Guns and Adler left, they then changed the name to Guns and Roses as it was a good name, though it seems odd to wait till Guns left...
