Why is it cold in the winter?

That part of the planet "Earth" that is having its winter and hence the cold part of the year, is because that area spends a greater time facing away from the Sun. Shorter daytime and longer nights.

Also due to the tilt of the Earth's axis of rotation. When your hemisphere has the pole on the Sun side, the light from the Sun comes down straighter, so less energy is 'lost' in passing the atmosphere. When the pole is on the away side, the light has to pass more obliquely, therefore losing more energy. Or so I was taught at school. They've probably changed it since then. O tempora, O mores.
