He was ordered to recant (supposedly he uttered the famous statement: "And yet it moves," a referance to the Copernican theory that the Earth rotates on its axis), and was originally to be imprisoned.
However, the Pope commuted his sentence to house arrest...which Galileo served until he died blind at the age of seventy-eight.
