According to Webster's 1913 Dictionary it is a kind of stand, or piece of furniture, having shelves for books, ornaments.
A place to put your whatchamacallits and thingummybobs.
That definition is for the one word 'whatnot'.

A Whatnot is not what a lot of people might think it is. What a Whatnot is may well surprise you. What if you never found what a Whatnot was? It's not what you know, it's who you know. But I tell you what. I'll tell you what I think a Whatnot is, and if that is not what a Whatnot is, you can tell ME what a Whatnot is. To my knowledge, a Whatnot is a narrow piece of furniture positioned in a corner or other situation where it fills in an "awkward" space.
