John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792) was a famous gambler who is reputed to have invented the sandwich, a piece of meat between two slices of bread which he ordered from his servants when he was gambling because he had little time to have a formal meal because of his need to gamble.

He was also the First Lord of the Admiralty at the time of James Cook and the Sandwich Islands, now Hawaii, were named in his honour.
