    Why was there a sudden wild sell-out of hats in Lagos in 1956?

    		Queen Elizabeth's visit.

    Queen Elizabeth visited Nigeria in 1956. Persons were invited to royal garden parties. There are two strict rules everybody who attends a royal garden party must obey: no one brings in a camera and all the women must wear a hat.

    		The reason was the Queen's visit but the story I heard was a little more amusing than that.

    The Queen, as you said, was due to visit Lagos, and the rumour had been put about that hats should be removed in her presence. However, the climate being what it is, not many people owned hats so many rushed out and bought one.
