Up until Franklin Roosevelt, no previous president had served more than two terms, and as far as I know, very few even ran for a third term. Was there some kind of unwritten law or convention that disallowed it?

Washington had refused to run for a third term, saying that it was not good for any person to serve more than two terms as president...people had wanted to respect our Founding Father by following his advice.
