Schrodinger's Cat was an attempt by Schrodinger to demononstrate the bizarre world of quantum mechanics in a way that people could understand. In particular, the Copenhagen Interpretation says that all possible events occur and exist side by side in a "superposition of states" until we observe them and reduce the result to just a single physical outcome. He devised a "thought experiment" in which the survival of a cat in a sealed box depended on a single quantum event (the decay of an atom) which might or might not occur. Since the atom would both decay and not decay, the cat would both die and remain alive until we opened the box and observed it.
Despite the absurdity of this situation, scientists continue to use the Copenhagen model, because it provides results that work.
