How is the race to be the Democratic Party candidate decided? Does each state carry a certain number of votes, as with the race for the presidency?

Pretty much, with a few exceptions. Each state is alloted a certain number of delegates to the Democratic convention in Boston, but some are pledged delegates and some are called super delegates. Pledged delegates (assuming the state's caucus or primary was binding, as most are) must vote for the candidate preferred by the people of their state, but super delegates can vote for anyone they want. Ain't democracy grand? Usually the super delegates are members of local or state government, though I guess anyone could be chosen.
