    Which bird's name means white head in Welsh?

    pen means head, gwyn is Welsh for white.

    		It certainly is the penguin. I can't think why, though. Don't most penguins have black heads?

    		The bird we call the penguin today wasn't the one the name applied to originally. This was the Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis), a flightless bird related to the guillemot and puffin (and little auk) which is now extinct (1844). Unlike the modern penguin, which is mostly found south of the equator, this was a bird of northern seas. It didn't have a white head either, but did have a large white spot between the eye and the beak.
