On his deathbed Cromwell may have designated his son, Richard, as his successor; Oliver died on 3 Sep 1658, and Richard was immediately proclaimed Lord Protector.

7 May 1659, declaration of the Parliament established "commonwealth without a king, single person, or house of lords", thus effectively terminating Richard's protectorship (Richard submitted to this resolution in a letter read in the Parliament on 25 May 1659). After his deposition, Richard Cromwell lived in Europe until he was allowed to return to England in 1680.
