Strictly speaking yes, although due to the quantity and duration of contact it would be highly unlikely to cause illness.
I did "play" with mercury at school in Physics lessons but nowadays I understand this no longer possible due to stricter rules.
It can be absorbed through the skin but very slowly.
Do not consume it and do not heat it. Mercury vapour is highly toxic and should not be breathed in.

It's especially dangerous if the skin has any cuts as mercury wreaks considerable havoc when it enters the bloodstream.
