The United States is the world's third most populous country (behind China and India), with 272 million people living in an area of 9.6 million square kilometers.
Based on a fertility rate of 2.07 children born per woman, the population is growing at 0.87% per year. For every 1,000 persons, there are 15 births and 9 deaths. This natural relationship between births and deaths accounted for about 70% of the U.S.'s population growth in the mid-1990s. But immigration contributures as well. Each year 3 persons are added by immigration for every 1,000 people already in the population. During the first half of the 1990s, the American population grew at one percent per year, which means the country aded 2.7 million people annually. Demographers project that the U.S. population will surpass 300 million by the year 2010 and may reach 392 million by 2050. The American population is aging. People 14 and under comprise 22%, while those 65 or older comprise 12% and are increasing in number. In fact, the fastest-growing segment of the population is 85 years and older.
