What does this mean, "Every dog has its day"?

The time will come when they will gain recognition and, at least for one day, fortune will smile on them. Though it is not known who coined the metaphor, the first mention can be traced back to 1545. 55 years later, Shakespere made Hamlet say: "The cat mew and dog will have his day". Carlye added in 1837 that it even applied to rabid dogs.
