Given that space is calculated to start at an altitude of 50 miles, Laika was NOT the first dog in space. Laika in Sputnik II (3/11/57) was the first animal to GO INTO ORBIT! Russian dogs, Albina and Tsyganka, had achieved sub-orbital trips into space earlier than Nov 57, achieving an altitude of 53 miles.
Several "American" animals had been "passengers" in V2 rockets by the late 1940's, but none had achieved altitudes in excess of 50 miles. By the early 1950's monkeys and mice had been to an altitude of 45 miles.

Oh, png re Gordo - there was an American astronaut called Gordo, it was his nickname.
Leroy Gordon "Gordo" Cooper was the 10th man in space, the 6th American. He was the last American to journey into space alone as the sole occupant of the Mercury 9 capsule "Faith 7" on 15th May 1963.

That's it! Played by Dennis Quaid in "The Right Stuff". I knew I'd heard it somewhere before. Thanks!
