2001
In a change of tradition, the Tooheys New Melbourne Cup Owner’s trophy will now be made from 18 carat gold instead of 9 carat. The Jockey and Trainer trophies will be enlarged to two-thirds the size of owner’s trophy, double the size of the miniature Cups normally presented. Additionally, the Strapper for the first time will be presented with a miniature Cup trophy.
With Cup prizemoney now at $4 million, the race’s profile expanding internationally and Tooheys New onboard as the race’s new sponsor, the Club felt it was the right time to upgrade the Melbourne Cup trophy to 18 carat gold. We also felt it appropriate to provide a more substantial trophy for the jockey and trainer and that the strapper receive a Cup miniature.
