There are several infractions that can cause a penalty shot. Several are: throwing a stick at a player on a breakaway, pulling a person down who is starting to make a breakaway, or one that happened yesterday - shooting another person's stick at the puck in one's defensive zone.

A penalty shot may also be called if a defensive player other than the goaltender closes his hand over the puck inside the goal crease.
