An encyclopedia says that gum is made from the sap of certain fruit trees like plum, peach, and cherry. Chewing gum is made from the sap of the sapodilla tree in Mexico, Guatemala, and British Honduras. Or it may be made from other gums from other trees also growing in tropical rain forests. Bubble gum is made from latex which comes from rubber trees in Brazil.
The latex that comes out of the bark of rubber trees is collected in cups and then it is boiled until it gets hard. At the chewing gum factory, the blocks are ground up and mixed with corn syrup, powdered sugar, and flavoring. Then it is rolled into thin layers and cut and packaged. People have been chewing gums of various kinds for 2,000 to 3,000 years, at least. http://www.mste.uiuc.edu/SNN/vol4no8.html#gum
