To clarify Mochyn's answer, George Bush the Elder served in the Navy during WWII. In fact, his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire during one bombing mission and he was forced to bail out of the plane and wait in the ocean to be rescued. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross as a result.
