However, Rolex say:
"Pocket watches were clumsy to carry and thus difficult to operate while in combat. Therefore, soldiers fitted them into primitive “cupped” leather straps so they could be worn on the wrist, thereby freeing up their hands during battle. It is believed that Girard-Perregaux equipped the German Imperial Naval with similar pieces as early as the 1880s, which they wore on their wrists while synchronizing naval attacks, and firing artillery."

Dès 1880, Constant Girard, visionnaire, développe un concept de montres-bracelets, destinées aux officiers de la marine allemande et commandées par l'empereur d'Allemagne Guillaume Ier.
Deux mille montres seront alors manufacturées. Cette production représente la première commercialisation importante de montres-bracelets. Mais cette idée, alors révolutionnaire au temps de la montre de poche, n'aura pas de suite. Il faudra, en effet, attendre le début du siècle suivant pour que la montre-bracelet rencontre le succès populaire qu’on lui connaît."
[This confirms Rolex's statement, and says 2000 wristwatches were made, ordered by the German Kaiser for officers in his forces. It also says that the popular use of wristwatches only came at the turn of the century.]
