The Fandur is a early ancestor of the Violin / Cello family. Used in medieval times, the Fandur is played with a hair strung bow.

I'll award a Yay for that. I can't find much better than that on google myself. I've actually got an incomplete one (no fingerboard - assuming it should have one). I was given it by a girl one night as a tip when I was a taxi driver and can't find out how to sort it, tune it or play the damn thing! I do collect and play some rather obscure things! It's a three stringed thing rather like a cross between a large wooden sauce boat and a small shillelaigh (or however you spell it) and it comes from Ossetia, next door to Chechniya. Weird looking.
