    Question #45038. jonimacaroni asks:

Why do Australians call European football 'Realfooty'?

    Bertho

In Australia we have 4 codes sport who all go under the label of 'footy.'

    Rugby Union
    Rugby League
    Soccer
    Australian Rules

Although Australia now has national competition and most states are more familiar with each code, it has not always been the case. Aussie Rules was played in the Southern States, while the Rugby Codes, more traditionaly were played in the Northen States, Queensland and New South Wales. Soccer was national, but not always with a national competition, all states played it. Victoria has a large population of Europeans and therefore soccer was a much more popular game there than in the north but still far from the dominate sport.

I hazard a guess, but the label 'real footy' stems from Europeans trying to distinguish the round ball game as the 'real' game of footy.
