Didn't the Russians invade Manchuria or Mongolian just before the surrender? One History Channel special hypothesized that the combined pressure from the Russian and Americans was too much for the Japanese where as the atomic bombs only meant their cities would be blow up by one bomber instead of a fleet. At that point in the war, allied planes roamed Japan nearly unmolested.

At the very end of WWII Soviet forces seized Manchuria and didn't return it to China till well into the 1950s (!) I've a hunch the USSR relied heavily on paras but I'm not sure that the Japanese were really able to engage in combat in any more ...
