The mysterious figure occasionally leaves notes along with the roses and cognac. In 1993, the mysterious figure left a note at the grave saying that the duty would soon be passed on to another person. A few years later, the new figure who took his place left a note saying that his father had been the original person and that he had died in 1998 and left the annual tribute up to his sons to fulfill.
Here's another little factoid: During the war on Iraq, the mysterious figure (one of the sons, obviously) left another note with the Cognac saying "The sacred memory of Poe and his final resting place is no place for French cognac. With great reluctance but for respect for family tradition the cognac is placed. The memory of Poe shall live evermore!" You can read an article about this 2003 note at this website: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/01/19/entertainment/main594047.shtml
According to that article, the bottles of cognac and the notes are all collected by Jeff Jerome, the curator of the Poe House and Museum. Some of the bottles of cognac are on display at the Poe House and Museum, in Baltimore.
