    Viscount Monck was Canada's first Governor General – but he had actually served as Governor of British North America since 1861. Lord Monck worked hard to build Confederation. His efforts to unite and stabilize the young country were recognized with his appointment to the position of Canada's first Governor General in 1867.

    John Graves Simcoe (February 25, 1752 – October 26, 1806) was the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada (modern-day southern Ontario plus the shoreline of Georgian Bay and Lake Superior) from 1791-1796.

    Sir William Alexander was knighted in 1609, granted the plantation of Nova Scotia in 1621 and made Viscount of Canada. He was appointed Secretary of State for Scotland in 1626, and was created Earl of Stirling in 1633.
