Hoover had gone to China for Bewick, Moreing and Co. to act as consultant to the Chinese government in developing mines. When the uprising began in June, 1900, the Hoovers along with hundreds of foreign families were trapped in Tientsin, protected only by a few soldiers from several foreign countries. In the thick of the city's defense, Hoover directed the building of barricades and joined the fire fighters, also arranging for the provision of food and water to six hundred anti-Boxer Chinese who had taken refuge in the compound. In August with the arrival of relief forces, Hoover and his wife, Lou were able to leave for England on a German mail boat.
