“The word “gaga” is borrowed from the French.
The Petit Larousse Illustré says it is a colloquial abbreviation of “gâteux,” which means “affected by physical and mental disturbances and decay and by incontinence, in certain mental illnesses or neurological conditions.”

Yay Tabby and there is also a reference to the painter Paul Gaugin. They say he was ridiculed for creating a new style and his name was misconstrued to become gaga and hence the popular saying at the time for a ridiculous insane person.
