What is the maximum number of days that a United States president could theoretically remain in office?

    Question #45319. Asked by researcher.

    3650 (not counting leap-years)

    Hamlet.

Theoretically, if a Vice President takes over when there are only two years left in the President's term then they can still serve two full presidential terms (if elected)...

So the answer would be something close to 10 X 365 = 3650 days.

Here's the wording of the 22nd Ammendment:

    1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

    2. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.

The Bottom line is 2 full terms....however they happen. 365 x 8 =2920 plus a couple of leap years days.

But if a President dies in office his Vice President can serve out his last two years and then go on to be elected President twice more.

We almost saw this happen with Johnson who completed JFK's term, served an elected term as President, and then chose not to run for his final possible term.
