    What was the likely purpose of the human appendix?

    		The same as for any animal that eats grass. It was to aid in the digestion of plant material. As we developed over the millenia the natural useage declined and the appendix shrunk to what it is now.

    		There are three medical theories - (1) It harbored large amounts of bacteria that helped to digest cellulose in plant material. (2) It might manufacture the anti-body producing white blood cell called B lymphocytes. (3) It may "attract" body infections to localize the infection in one spot that is not critical to body functioning.

    The first recorded surgical removal of the appendix was by Claudries Amyand in England in 1736...
