The question actually betrays a commonly held misconception, namely that Magellan himself circumnavigated the world, which he did not - he was killed in the Phillipines in April 1521.
Of the ships which set sail, only one - the Vitoria (sic) - made it back, arriving in September 1522 with a skeleton crew commanded by the Basque navigator Juan Sebastian de Elcano (a.k.a. del Cano) who had originally been master of the Concepcion, and who managed to survive being implicated in an earlier attempted mutiny against Magellan.

DaveLister is correct about Magellan not sailing around the world. Guess I should have finished reading the book before I posted the question.
I've only ever seen it as Victoria; but I was wrong about the around the world part.
