Why do we cry?

We cry when our lacrimal glands produce an abundance of fluid. The lacrimal glands in our eyes constantly produce fluid to keep our eyes moist; each time you blink this fluid is spread across your eyes. When a foreign object (or the chemicals of an onion) comes in contact with our eyes, the lacrimal glands react by producing an abundance of fluid in order to wash away the irritant. Emotional tears are triggered by completely different nerves and function to relieve any stress we might be feeling.
