The Roma are believed to have left India about 1000 A.D. and to have passed through what is now Afghanistan, Persia, Armenia, and Turkey.

The name gypsies comes from Egyptians because it was believed that they came from Egypt, but in fact they came from Romania, hence their own name for themselves "Rom".

Hey Gnomon, long time no see! Me thinks the reason for us both not being around as much is the same, if you get my drift.

My first thought was Romania as well, until I did a bit of research. The link I gave does go into the name and the fact that the term "real gypsies" is a bit of an oxymoron.
I do stand by my answer and this link supports it.

Brainyblonde is correct (go figure). They certainly settled (if that is the correct term for gypsies) in Romania during the last days of the Eastern Roman empire.

Their expertise as tinkers probably suggests that they were an artisan class in tha Byzantine empire, although originally they were probably mercanaries.

Dispute about their origins has been fuelled by their own misconceptions and subterfuge, fostered by persecution. The term Gypsies, while pertaining to their appearance placed them within the christian community as coptics, whereas they only adopted christianity after entering Europe.
