One of them was from a small village only a few miles from where I live.
He was aided by two pacemakers, Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher. However, whilst Chataway came 2nd, Brasher was 4th. Who came third?
Often referred to as the forgotten man of the race, it was Tom Hulatt, a runner who made the best of his talent from a comparatively underprivileged background.
While Bannister, Chataway and Brasher trained in London, the difficulties that Hulatt had to overcome were considerable. Living in the Derbyshire mining village of Tibshelf, he would train along the local railway track and, in his employment at Williamthorpe Colliery, he would shovel 20 tons of coal a day.
